Many environmental challenges we face come from how industries make things today. But biology can make things too, at massive scale — think forests or ocean ecosystems. Millions of years ago when the earth was alarmingly overheated, it was biology — an aquatic fern — that cooled the planet.

Now companies like Ginkgo Bioworks are exploring how we can harness the scale of biology to make manufacturing more sustainable. Ginkgo is the world’s leading cell programming company, making everything from food to specialty chemicals to pharmaceuticals. Our team has had a long relationship with Ginkgo, since its first institutional funding.

In its 2022 Sustainability Report, Ginkgo highlighted its progress on a number of fronts:

  • Ginkgo has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 20% since 2021.

  • The company has committed to using 100% renewable energy by 2025.

  • Ginkgo has developed a new way to produce food that uses 90% less water than traditional methods.

We congratulate Ginkgo on all it has achieved and look forward to developments to come!
